The training is introduced with close range combat, since that is the hardest range to fight from. In addition to close range, two other ranges are taught – Long range, when you can reach you opponent’s hand with your longest weapon but (s)he can not reach your body, and intermediate range, when you can reach the opponent’s hand with your shortest weapon. Close range combat is defined as when you can reach the body of your opponent with your shortest weapon.
There are three different levels of techniques – attack, countering and recountering.
As a beginner you will first learn footwork and basic strikes (there are 9) to later be able to move on to sparring, that will build up your timing and precision.
After a while you will learn to spontaneously flow between the different ranges and it will all dissolve into one single range that flows closer and further, in and out.
We do not have any predefined single forms, but you will instead be trained in freely expressed shadow boxing through free technique combinations.
A typical training session might look something like this:
We start with footwork for about 20 minutes, to later move into fundamental striking. After which we usually try what we learned in different types of sparring.
Like everything we teach, there is a large focus on Structure.
